CNChengdu, Sichuan Province, China · manufacturing_plant
Tongwei Group headquarters in Chengdu; largest aquaculture feed producer in China and world's largest carp/freshwater fish feed producer. Tongwei has 100+ feed mills across China serving the world's largest aquaculture market. Same Tongwei Group is also China's largest solar wafer and solar cell producer -- aquafeed and solar panels from one Chinese conglomerate.

Did you know2024
Tongwei Co., Ltd. is simultaneously China's largest aquaculture feed producer (100+ feed mills, primarily carp and freshwater fish) AND China's largest solar cell manufacturer (accounting for ~20%+ of global solar cell production). The same Chengdu-headquartered conglomerate feeds the fish on Chinese dinner tables and manufactures the solar cells on Chinese and global rooftops. No other company in the world has a dominant position in both the food system and the solar energy supply chain. Tongwei's aquafeed division generates ~$8-10B revenue; its solar division ~$10-15B.
Tongwei Co., Ltd. ↗Origin2023
Tongwei Co., Ltd. was founded in 1984 in Chengdu, Sichuan by Xie Yifang as a fish feed company — producing compound aquaculture feed for China's inland fish farming industry. By the early 2000s, Tongwei had become one of China's largest aquaculture feed producers, a position it maintains today. In 2006, Xie recognized the solar industry opportunity and pivoted Tongwei's industrial resources into polysilicon manufacturing. By 2024, Tongwei had become the world's largest polysilicon producer (~26% global market share, 910,000 MT/year capacity) while still operating its original aquaculture feed business. A fish feed company became the dominant global supplier of the primary raw material for solar panels — one of the most dramatic corporate transformations from food to clean energy in modern industrial history.
Tongwei Co., Ltd. ↗Capacity2023
Tongwei's polysilicon plants in Sichuan (Leshan, Yongxiang) are powered predominantly by hydroelectric power from Sichuan's extensive river systems — giving Tongwei a lower carbon intensity and lower operating cost for polysilicon production than competitors located in coal-heavy regions like Xinjiang. This geographic advantage also reduces UFLPA (Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act) import risk compared to GCL-Poly and Daqo, whose primary production is in Xinjiang. In 2024-2025, a global polysilicon oversupply crisis (prices down ~80% from 2022 peaks) has put enormous pressure on all producers; Tongwei's hydropower cost advantage and non-Xinjiang supply chain position make it relatively better positioned to survive the downcycle.
