Did you know2021
The Toro Company — best known for lawn mowers, snowblowers, and golf course maintenance equipment — became a major force in precision agriculture micro-irrigation when it acquired Hunter Industries in 2021. Hunter's drip and micro-spray systems, combined with Toro's existing irrigation controller business, now serve 50,000+ landscape contractors and a growing US agricultural market.
The Toro Company ↗Origin2023
The Toro Company was founded in 1914 in Minneapolis as The Toro Motor Company, originally making engines for Bull Tractor Company farm tractors. When Bull Tractor failed, Toro pivoted to making power mowing equipment for golf courses, reasoning that golf was growing rapidly among America's new professional class. For decades it was primarily a golf course maintenance equipment company -- the mowers that maintain Augusta National fairways are mostly Toro. The company expanded into residential lawn care in the mid-20th century and then underground construction equipment through acquisitions. Its 2021 acquisition of Hunter Industries ($1.05B) -- a precision drip irrigation specialist based in San Marcos, California -- was a strategic pivot into water-efficient agricultural irrigation at a time when western US water scarcity was becoming a critical constraint for California and Arizona farming. A golf course mower company is now one of the leading US precision irrigation technology companies.
