Torralba's gypsum quarries supply construction wallboard (their primary market), but gypsum (calcium sulfate) is also a regulated food additive (E516) used to firm tofu, clarify beer and wine, and fortify flour — the same mineral compound ships from Almeria to both drywall plants in Northern Europe and food processing facilities in Asia. Agricultural gypsum from the same quarry belt is exported to sub-Saharan African farms as a soil amendment that breaks up sodic soils and supplies crops with sulfur, linking European construction material supply to African food security. A disruption to Almeria gypsum exports affects both housing and agriculture in import-dependent markets.
