Toyo Aluminium was founded in 1931 in Osaka as one of Japan's early aluminum processing companies, building aluminum foil and powder manufacturing capabilities during Japan's pre-war industrial expansion. The company became a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., the global trading conglomerate, which provided access to international markets and bauxite/primary aluminum supply chains. Toyo Aluminium developed Japan's domestic capacity for electrolytic capacitor foil — the electrochemically etched, high-surface-area aluminum foil that enabled Japanese capacitor manufacturers (Nichicon, Nippon Chemi-Con, Rubycon) to become world leaders in precision capacitor production. The same electrochemical foil expertise that built Japan's capacitor industry in the 1960s-1990s was adapted to battery-grade foil production as Japan's battery manufacturers (Sanyo, later Panasonic after acquiring Sanyo) became the world's dominant lithium-ion cell producers from the 1990s onward. Toyo's technical positioning across capacitor foil, battery foil, and aluminum pastes reflects the breadth of applications that precision aluminum surface chemistry enables.
