Origin2023
Toyobo Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Boseki, meaning "Tokyo Spinning") was founded in 1882 in Osaka during Japan's Meiji era industrialization as a cotton spinning company — one of Japan's first modern textile mills established to produce domestic yarn and fabric rather than importing from Britain. The "Tokyo" in the original name reflected the founding shareholders' Tokyo business connections, even though the company was based in Osaka. Toyobo grew through the 20th century from cotton spinning to synthetic fibers, and then from commodity textiles to high-performance specialty materials: the same fiber chemistry expertise that made cotton yarn at industrial scale in 1882 evolved into the capability to engineer cellulose acetate hollow fiber membranes at nanometer precision in the 21st century. Toyobo is the only global manufacturer of cellulose acetate (CA) hollow fiber reverse osmosis membranes — a distinct product category from the polyamide thin-film composite membranes made by DuPont, Hydranautics, Toray, and LG Chem. CA hollow fiber RO membranes are more resistant to chlorine disinfection byproducts than polyamide membranes, making them preferred for certain applications. The sole-source nature of Toyobo's CA HF-RO membranes means that installations globally designed around this specific technology have no alternative supplier if Toyobo were disrupted.
