Treibacher Industrie AG, founded in 1898 in Althofen, Carinthia (Austria), has one of the most unexpected origin stories in industrial chemistry: it was established specifically to commercialize "pyrophoric iron" — the discovery by Carl Auer von Welsbach (the Austrian chemist who also invented the gas mantle and separated rare earth elements) that a cerium-iron alloy would produce sparks when struck. This alloy, called "misch metal" (German for mixed metal), became the flint in every mechanical cigarette lighter ever made — the Zippo, the Ronson, all lighter flints worldwide are thin cylinders of Auer-formula cerium-iron alloy. Treibacher was built to supply this product commercially, using hydroelectric power from Carinthian rivers to process cerium ore. The company survived the decline of cigarette lighters by expanding into rare earth polishing compounds (for optical and semiconductor applications) and tungsten carbide hard materials (for cutting tools and wear parts). Over 120 years, Treibacher transformed from a lighter flint factory into one of Europe's leading specialty materials companies while never abandoning its original rare earth chemistry.

Treibacher's tungsten carbide (WC-Co) powder business connects it to one of the most critical but least-discussed supply chain chokepoints in advanced manufacturing: the global supply of cemented carbide (hardmetal) for cutting tools. Virtually every machining operation on metal — turning, milling, drilling, reaming — uses tungsten carbide cutting inserts, which are manufactured from WC-Co powder by sintering. The global cutting tool market depends on a handful of powder suppliers; Treibacher is among the few European producers of WC-Co powder, competing with Asian suppliers increasingly dependent on Chinese tungsten feedstock. China controls roughly 80% of global tungsten mining, meaning a Chinese export restriction or trade disruption cascades through Treibacher's powder supply into European cutting tool makers, and from there into every European manufacturer that machines metal — automotive, aerospace, energy equipment. Treibacher's Austrian carbide powder operation is thus a European buffer in an otherwise China-dependent supply chain, one whose existence is unknown to the manufacturers it ultimately serves.
