  Trelleborg qualifies and manufactures rubber and PTFE seals simultaneously for nuclear power plants (ASME Section III QA Level 1 seals — the highest quality classification for reactor cooling system components) and for spacecraft (NASA-qualified silicone O-rings for rocket nozzle interfaces). The same Trelleborg materials qualification laboratory that tests a polymer seal compound for resistance to gamma radiation (nuclear) also tests the same compound family for resistance to cryogenic LOX/LH2 contact (rocket fuel). A single Swedish polymer company's seal division is simultaneously in the supply chain for nuclear power generation and commercial space launch — two industries with the highest qualification barriers in the world, in which a failed O-ring caused the Challenger disaster and a failed primary coolant seal could cause a nuclear incident. • Origin2024

  Trelleborg AB was founded in 1905 in the coastal town of Trelleborg at the southernmost tip of Sweden — a city that itself is named for the Viking-era circular ring fortress built there around 980 AD. The company began as a rubber manufacturer to serve Sweden's emerging industrial and agricultural needs, becoming one of the first significant rubber product companies in Scandinavia. For most of the 20th century, Trelleborg was a diversified rubber products conglomerate making tires, rubber flooring, rubber gloves, and industrial hose. A strategic shift beginning in the 1990s under CEO Fredrik Arp progressively sold off the tire business (Trelleborg Wheel Systems was ultimately sold to Yokohama Rubber in 2021 for €2.07B) and commodity rubber divisions, and reinvested in specialty engineered polymer sealing — moving Trelleborg from a commodity rubber company to a precision-critical specialty polymers company. The Sealing Solutions division, which now generates over half of Trelleborg's revenue, qualifies seals for nuclear power plants, spacecraft launch vehicles, and surgical equipment — applications where a rubber compound failure costs billions or lives.
