Tronox Holdings acquired its Wyoming soda ash business (formerly FMC Wyoming Corporation) as part of a broader strategy to diversify beyond titanium dioxide -- the primary pigment in white paint, which is Tronox's core business. FMC Wyoming was originally the chemical subsidiary of FMC Corporation (a defense and agricultural chemical company), which operated the Green River Basin trona mining operation as part of its diversified specialty chemical portfolio before Tronox's acquisition. Tronox itself was spun off from Kerr-McGee Corporation (an oil and mining company) in 2005, carrying significant legacy asbestos and environmental liability from Kerr-McGee's mining operations -- a heritage that drove Tronox into bankruptcy in 2009. The current Tronox emerged from bankruptcy in 2011 as a public company focused on TiO2. The Wyoming soda ash operation is a mid-sized appendage to a company primarily known as the global pigment supplier that makes every gallon of white house paint whiter.
