HQ DE · Baden-Württembergwebsite ↗

German family-owned industrial laser and machine tool manufacturer (HQ Ditzingen, Baden-Württemberg); world leader in laser cutting/welding machines for sheet metal fabrication. Sole supplier of the high-power CO₂ laser amplifier system used in ASML's EUV light source — the laser that fires 50,000 pulses per second at tin droplets to generate 13.5nm EUV light. Won ASML Supplier Award for Technology (2024). First successful test of next-generation high-energy EUV laser (2025); series production scheduled 2026. 50% power increase planned by 2030. TRUMPF's primary customers are auto manufacturers and metal fabricators — the same laser technology that cuts car body panels also generates the light that prints every leading-edge AI chip.

  • Did you know2023

TRUMPF GmbH (Ditzingen, Germany) is primarily known as the world's leading manufacturer of laser cutting and welding machines for sheet metal fabrication — the machines that cut car door panels, aircraft fuselage components, and industrial equipment. The exact same CO₂ laser technology is what TRUMPF supplies to ASML as the sole LPP drive laser: it fires 1,000-watt pulses at tin droplets 50,000 times per second to generate the 13.5nm EUV light that exposes every leading-edge AI chip. A company whose biggest revenue driver is automotive sheet metal fabrication lasers is simultaneously the irreplaceable supplier of the light engine inside every ASML EUV scanner. TRUMPF won ASML's Supplier Award for Technology in 2024 for this work.

  • Origin2023

TRUMPF was founded in 1923 in Stuttgart by Christian Trumpf as a tool and machine trade company, then pivoted into punching and bending machine manufacturing in the 1930s. The Leibinger family (which married into the Trumpf ownership) has controlled the company since 1961. TRUMPF transitioned from mechanical punching machines to laser technology in the 1970s -- an early bet on CO2 laser manufacturing when industrial lasers were still laboratory curiosities. By the 1980s and 1990s, TRUMPF had become the world leader in industrial sheet metal laser cutting, selling machines to automotive manufacturers across Europe and Japan. The CO2 laser expertise that TRUMPF built making sheet metal cutting machines is the exact technology that qualified it to build the high-power laser amplifier that drives ASML's EUV light source. A family-controlled Stuttgart tool company that bet on laser technology in the 1970s accidentally became the sole supplier of the light engine for the world's most advanced chip-making machine 40 years later -- while its original sheet metal cutting machines still constitute the majority of its revenue.
