The company's business model is built on converting industrial slag — the glassy mineral byproduct of coal-fired power generation (coal slag, also called "black beauty") and iron/copper smelting (iron silicate slag) — into roofing granules and abrasive blasting media. Both slag types are generated in enormous quantities by the US power and industrial sectors and must be disposed of as solid waste if not repurposed. US Minerals provides a secondary use: crushing and screening slag to roofing granule particle size and coating it for asphalt shingle application. Slag-based granules compete on price with mined limestone granules (from SGI and 3M) and are accepted by major shingle manufacturers (GAF, Owens Corning) for standard granule applications. The industrial waste management supply chain (power plant and smelter slag disposal) and the residential construction materials supply chain (asphalt shingle granules) are linked through US Minerals' slag processing operations. A single US Minerals production order simultaneously reduces industrial solid waste and supplies the mineral surface of American residential roofing.
