Valmont was founded in 1946 in Valley, Nebraska as a galvanized steel pole fabricator for electric utilities and municipalities. In 1954, founder Robert Daugherty applied the identical manufacturing process — tubular steel truss fabrication plus hot-dip galvanizing — to create the center pivot irrigation system: a mile-span rotating arm of galvanized steel pipe trusses. The center pivot and the utility pole are structurally the same object made on the same production lines. This manufacturing equivalence is why Valmont is simultaneously North America's largest utility pole manufacturer AND the world's largest center pivot irrigation manufacturer — both markets trace to the same 1946 galvanized steel tube technology, applied to different structural problems.
