The ZeeWeed membrane brand was invented by Andrew Benedek — a Hungarian-born chemical engineer who emigrated to Canada, earned a PhD from McGill University, and founded Zenon Environmental Inc. in Burlington, Ontario in 1980. Benedek pioneered the hollow fiber PVDF membrane configuration and the membrane bioreactor (MBR) concept, patenting the ZeeWeed brand of submerged hollow fiber membranes that could be immersed directly in activated sludge bioreactors to simultaneously filter and biologically treat wastewater. Before ZeeWeed, MBR technology existed in theory but was impractical at large scale due to membrane fouling and pressure requirements; Zenon's submerged hollow fiber design solved these problems. Zenon was acquired by General Electric's water treatment division (GE Water) in 2006 for $758 million. GE Water was sold to SUEZ in 2017 for $3.4 billion. Veolia Environnement completed a contested acquisition of SUEZ's water treatment activities in 2022 after a hostile takeover battle that required French government mediation. A Hungarian-Canadian engineer's 1980 Burlington, Ontario invention passed through GE, SUEZ, and Veolia over 40+ years while becoming the world's most-installed MBR technology — in thousands of municipal wastewater plants producing water clean enough for discharge, reuse, or indirect potable reuse.
