    Verdesian's LCO Promoter Technology — which applies lipochitooligosaccharide (LCO) signaling molecules to soybean seeds to enhance root nodule formation — uses the same class of molecular signals that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi use to initiate symbiotic colonization of plant roots for phosphorus uptake. Rhizobium bacteria (nitrogen fixation) and mycorrhizal fungi (phosphorus uptake) both use Nod-factor/Myc-factor LCO signaling to establish root symbiosis — they borrowed the same molecular "handshake" code during evolution. Verdesian's LCO product for soybean nitrogen enhancement is thus based on the same signaling biology as the Myc factor products from Symbiom, Inocucor, and other companies targeting the mycorrhizal phosphorus uptake symbiosis for corn, wheat, and vegetable crops. The same molecular signal (an N-acetylglucosamide oligosaccharide decorated with fatty acid) simultaneously promotes nitrogen fixation via Rhizobium AND phosphorus access via mycorrhizae — Verdesian's LCO product is the agricultural application of a single evolutionary signaling pathway that affects both the nitrogen AND phosphorus nutrition of most of the world's crop plants.

    Verdesian Life Sciences was formed in 2010 when it acquired the North American inoculant business from Novozymes A/S — the Danish biotechnology company that is the world's largest producer of industrial enzymes, supplying the enzymes in Persil, Tide, and virtually every commercial laundry detergent worldwide. Novozymes had entered the agricultural biologicals market through its purchase of Novo Nordisk's fermentation-based agricultural business, including soybean Bradyrhizobium inoculants sold under the "Optimize" brand. When Novozymes sold the North American inoculant business to form Verdesian, the transaction spun off soybean rhizobium technology from a company whose primary identity is supplying the enzymes that clean laundry. The same Danish fermentation and microbiology expertise that produces Savinase (the protease in laundry detergent that removes protein stains) also produced the Bradyrhizobium cultures that allow North American soybeans to fix nitrogen without synthetic fertilizer — microbial fermentation technology applied to both laundry chemistry and agricultural nitrogen biology.
