Versalis's elastomers division makes EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) — the synthetic rubber used for automotive door seals, window seals, roofing membranes, and electrical cable insulation — from the same petrochemical infrastructure as its tire-rubber SBR. EPDM is a weather-resistant rubber whose key property is excellent UV, ozone, and heat resistance (unlike SBR, which degrades in sunlight). The same Versalis facility supplying SBR to tire makers supplies EPDM to construction waterproofing, automotive weatherstrip, and wire/cable insulation manufacturers. A Versalis plant outage is simultaneously an event for tire makers, commercial building waterproofing contractors, and wire harness suppliers — three industries with no apparent connection to each other. Versalis's Italian and German EPDM plants are among the largest European EPDM producers, and European automobile manufacturers have historically preferred European EPDM supply for automotive sealing systems due to logistics, quality control, and just-in-time delivery requirements.

Versalis S.p.A., Eni's chemical subsidiary, is one of Europe's largest producers of synthetic rubber — the petrochemical alternative to natural rubber that was originally developed during World War II when Allied access to Southeast Asian rubber plantations was cut off by Japanese occupation. The US government's wartime synthetic rubber program (Government Rubber-Styrene or GR-S, the precursor to modern SBR) created the industrial infrastructure for synthetic rubber production that survived into the peacetime economy. Versalis produces styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene rubber (BR) that typically constitute 30-50% of a modern tire's rubber compound alongside natural rubber. As part of Eni's integrated energy and chemical system, Versalis sources butadiene (the key C4 monomer) from Eni's refinery crackers and styrene from the aromatics supply chain — making its synthetic rubber production directly dependent on oil refinery economics and naphtha cracking operations. When European natural gas prices spiked in 2021-2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Versalis faced energy cost inflation across its chemical operations, and synthetic rubber prices rose alongside natural rubber, squeezing tire manufacturer margins from both sides of the rubber input equation.
