The mines serve European and Asian blast furnaces and provide US steelmakers a domestic alternative to Australian imports. A prolonged labor dispute in 2021-22 (1,100 workers on strike for 13 months) highlighted how thin this redundancy is.

Warrior Met Coal's Alabama high-volatile A metallurgical coal is exported almost entirely to European and Asian steelmakers -- not used domestically -- because the Warrior coalfield produces coal with specific coking chemistry that complements Australian and Canadian premium HCC in blast furnace blends. European steelmakers (ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel Europe, Voestalpine) blend Warrior coal into their furnace mix to optimize coke strength. This means Alabama underground miners are direct suppliers to European infrastructure -- the rebar in a German bridge or a French highway project may contain steel made partly with coal dug from Jefferson County, Alabama. In 2021, Warrior's ~1,000 United Mine Workers members went on strike for 2+ years in one of the longest US coal strikes in modern history, briefly constraining European steel blast furnace coal blends during the strike period.

Warrior Met Coal was created from the 2016 bankruptcy of Walter Energy, a diversified mining company whose Alabama met coal assets became uneconomic when global metallurgical coal prices collapsed 2012-2016. Walter Energy had accumulated debt through acquisitions (Western Coal, a Canadian met coal producer) financed on the assumption that Chinese steel demand would sustain high met coal prices indefinitely. When prices fell from $300+/MT to under $100/MT, Walter could not service its debt. A group of creditors reorganized the Alabama assets into a lean, pure-play met coal company -- Warrior Met Coal -- and took it public on the NYSE in 2017 at a time when most institutional investors were divesting coal exposure. The restructuring created one of the last pure-play US metallurgical coal exporters listed on a major exchange.
