Weidmann Electrical Technology AG was founded in 1877 by Heinrich Weidmann in Rapperswil, St. Gallen, Switzerland as a paper manufacturing company. In the 1880s-1890s, as electrical infrastructure expanded across Europe and the US, Weidmann recognized that transformer designers needed high-quality, thermally stable paper for winding insulation -- normal paper degrades too quickly at transformer operating temperatures. Weidmann developed the specialized Kraft insulating paper that became the transformer industry standard, making them the first company to industrialize the production of electrical-grade transformer paper. For 148 years, the same Swiss family company has been the world's primary supplier of the Kraft paper and pressboard that insulates the windings inside power transformers. Every power transformer in the global grid -- including those handling renewable energy from wind farms and solar plants -- contains Weidmann insulation. A 19th-century Swiss paper mill is critical infrastructure for 21st-century electricity transmission.
