Welspun Group is simultaneously one of the world's largest home textiles manufacturers (luxury bath towels, bedsheets, rugs sold under the Christy, Spaces, and white-label brands to Walmart, Costco, Target, and Kohl's) and one of the world's largest large-diameter steel pipe producers (supplying oil and gas transmission pipelines including US shale gathering systems and LNG export terminals). These two businesses operate in entirely separate industries — the same Gujarat-headquartered Indian conglomerate that makes the Supima cotton bath towels in American hotel rooms also makes the steel pipeline under the highway that carries the natural gas heating those hotels. Welspun's Anjar pipe mill supplied pipe for multiple major US pipeline projects (including segments of the Gulf Coast Express and other Permian Basin gas takeaway projects) while simultaneously the parent group's textiles operation was navigating the fallout from a 2016 cotton-origin scandal (Target terminated a contract after Welspun India was found labeling standard cotton as premium Egyptian cotton). Welspun's Little Rock, Arkansas pipe mill (Welspun Tubular LLC) operates with approximately 200,000 tonnes per year capacity for large-diameter line pipe and was specifically built to serve US pipeline projects domestically, avoiding the Section 232 25% steel tariffs that apply to Indian pipe imports. US pipeline project specifications (FERC-regulated interstate natural gas pipelines, DOT-regulated hazardous liquid pipelines) for major projects require domestic or Section 232-exempt suppliers — Welspun USA fills the domestic production requirement despite being Indian-owned. The practical effect: major US natural gas infrastructure depends on a Little Rock, Arkansas pipe mill owned by the same Mumbai-headquartered conglomerate that makes bath towels for Walmart, with both businesses subject to the same Indian corporate governance and balance sheet at the Welspun Group parent level.

Welspun Group was founded in 1985 in Kutch district, Gujarat, India by BK Goenka (Balkrishan Goenka) as a yarn and textile business. The group expanded into steel pipes in the 1990s and built a large-diameter line pipe mill in Anjar, Gujarat — near the same port infrastructure used for their textile exports.
