    Palm oil is the most-produced vegetable oil on Earth and is estimated to be in roughly half of all packaged supermarket products — and Wilmar International is the world's largest processor of it. Crucially, palm oil isn't just food: yes, it's in margarine, chocolate, instant noodles, ice cream and baked goods, but its derivatives are also surfactants and emollients in soap, shampoo, detergent, toothpaste, lipstick and cosmetics. So the same crop, refined and split by Wilmar, ends up in both the snack aisle and the bathroom cabinet. Wilmar is integrated from plantation through refining and oleochemicals to consumer brands (in China its Arawana/Yihai Kerry cooking oil is a household name). So a single Singapore company sits behind an ingredient hiding in an astonishing fraction of everyday products across food, cleaning and personal care — a concentration that almost no Western shopper has ever connected to one corporate name, even as they consume and apply its output dozens of times a day.

    Because Wilmar processes so much of the world's palm oil, it became the focal point of one of the largest environmental controversies in agriculture. Clearing tropical rainforest and draining peatland in Indonesia and Malaysia to plant oil palm has driven deforestation, carbon-releasing fires and the loss of orangutan and other habitat — and as the dominant buyer and refiner, Wilmar sits at the chokepoint where that supply is consolidated. That made it the target of sustained NGO campaigns (notably from Greenpeace) and ultimately the company whose "No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation" sourcing policy, adopted in 2013, set a template the whole industry followed. So Wilmar is simultaneously blamed as the funnel for deforestation-linked oil and positioned as the gatekeeper whose sourcing rules can clean up — or fail to clean up — the entire palm supply chain. The stakes just rose with the EU's deforestation regulation (EUDR), which will require proof that palm oil entering Europe isn't tied to recent forest clearing, putting Wilmar's traceability systems at the center of whether a globally ubiquitous ingredient can keep flowing to Western markets.

    Wilmar and Bunge together illustrate how the world's edible-oil supply splits into two concentrated camps. Bunge anchors the Americas-centric soybean and canola complex (the ABCD traders); Wilmar dominates the Asia-centric palm-oil complex from its Singapore base. Wilmar was built by Kuok Khoon Hong (nephew of Malaysian tycoon Robert Kuok, the "Sugar King") into a vertically integrated giant spanning plantations, refineries, oleochemicals, consumer brands and even sugar and flour. The result is that a handful of integrated agribusinesses — a few in soy/grain, a few in palm — control most of the world's vegetable-oil and protein flows, the literal fats and feed underpinning the global diet. As with the ABCD traders, that concentration means the cost and availability of cooking oil, processed-food fats, animal feed and even biofuel feedstock for much of the planet is shaped by the decisions of a small number of firms most consumers will never knowingly encounter.
