Xiamen's SEZ status attracted foreign investment and technology in the 1980s-1990s; Kingdomway built its fermentation chemistry capability during this period with the specific goal of producing high-value biochemicals (CoQ10, carotenoids, fatty acids) for export markets. The CoQ10 market, previously dominated by Japanese manufacturers (Kaneka Corporation, Nisshin Pharma), was disrupted by Kingdomway's ability to produce CoQ10 at significantly lower cost using Chinese fermentation scale and labor economics. By the 2010s, Kingdomway had captured 60-70% of global CoQ10 production.
