Yazaki Corporation was founded in 1929 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan by Sadami Yazaki as an automotive parts distribution company. Shizuoka Prefecture — the home of Toyota's founding city (Toyota City is adjacent) and dozens of automotive suppliers — became the geographic center of Japan's nascent automobile industry ecosystem. Yazaki pivoted from distribution to manufacturing wiring harnesses as Japanese automobile production industrialized in the postwar era, growing with Toyota, Nissan, and Honda as their principal harness supplier. The company expanded internationally following Japanese automakers: wherever Toyota built an assembly plant (UK, US, Thailand, Brazil), Yazaki built a wiring harness facility to supply it. This geographic expansion created Yazaki's 619-facility, 46-country global footprint. Wiring harnesses are fundamentally hand-assembled — the complexity of routing, bundling, and connecting hundreds of wire circuits through a vehicle body requires human dexterity that robotics cannot economically replicate — so Yazaki follows labor cost gradients, building harness plants in lower-wage regions near each OEM assembly location. The company that started distributing automotive parts in 1929 Shizuoka now provides the electrical nervous system for most Japanese and many European and American vehicles from factories spanning six continents.
