Did you know2023
YOFC — the world's largest producer of standard telecommunications optical fiber — also manufactures specialty fibers for military and nuclear applications from the same Wuhan manufacturing platform: radiation-hardened fiber for nuclear power plant sensor systems and space satellites; polarization-maintaining fiber for fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) used in inertial navigation systems of missiles, aircraft, and submarines; and distributed sensing fiber for pipeline leak detection and military perimeter sensing. The same YOFC draw tower that pulls fiber for internet broadband cables can also produce the polarization-maintaining fiber in the navigation system of Chinese PLA submarines and missiles. Global broadband internet expansion and Chinese military modernization share a manufacturing platform in Wuhan — a supply chain connection that Western defense contractors and telecom infrastructure designers have not fully internalized.
YOFC ↗Concentration2024
YOFC is the only company in the world to have independently developed and commercially deployed all three mainstream optical fiber preform manufacturing technologies (OVD, VAD, and PCVD). Combined with vertical integration into SiCl4 production via Hubei Flying Optical Fibre Material, YOFC has unique supply chain resilience and process flexibility unavailable to any competitor.
YOFC ↗Capacity2023
YOFC's scale in optical fiber production has fundamentally changed the economics of global broadband. Between 2010 and 2024, Chinese fiber manufacturers (led by YOFC, Hengtong, ZTT) drove the price of standard single-mode optical fiber from ~$10-15/fiber-km to ~$4-6/fiber-km — a 60-70% cost reduction. This price collapse enabled fiber broadband deployment at unprecedented scale in developing countries and accelerated FTTH programs globally. YOFC capacity of 200+ million fiber-km/year is roughly 25% of global production — making YOFC alone larger than the combined US, Japanese, and European fiber production. The US and European fiber manufacturers (Corning, Prysmian, Sumitomo) have lobbied for anti-dumping duties on Chinese fiber because YOFC's production costs (leveraging Chinese manufacturing scale, SiCl4 domestic supply, and state support) are below Western manufacturers' variable costs.
YOFC ↗Origin2023
YOFC (Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Co., Ltd.) was established in 1988 in Wuhan, China as a joint venture between the Wuhan Posts and Telecommunications Research Institute and Draka (Dutch fiber manufacturer, later acquired by Prysmian). The JV structure brought Western optical fiber technology to China at the critical moment when China was building its initial telecom network. YOFC mastered OVD technology (from Corning licensing/collaboration), then VAD (Japanese technology), then PCVD (from Draka/Philips heritage). Mastering all three independently is a unique manufacturing capability globally. Listed on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges, YOFC is predominantly Chinese-state adjacent through WPTRI connections but maintains Western JV partnerships. The company's scale helped make optical fiber inexpensive enough for global broadband expansion.
