Indium occurs naturally in trace concentrations in zinc and tin ore deposits; it is recovered as a byproduct of zinc and tin smelting rather than mined independently. The same Yunnan Chengfeng smelter processing tin ore for food can applications also recovers the indium that becomes the ITO coating on a Samsung smartphone touchscreen. The food packaging supply chain and the consumer electronics display supply chain converge at a Yunnan nonferrous metals smelter whose core business is tin but whose byproduct business includes one of the electronics industry's most critical specialty metals.

Yunnan Chengfeng Nonferrous Metals is located in Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province — China's most important tin mining region, which also straddles the border with Vietnam and is adjacent to Myanmar (where significant tin-bearing deposits exist). The same Yunnan-Myanmar-Vietnam geological belt that produces cassiterite (tin ore) also contains significant indium-bearing zinc-sulfide ores. Yunnan Chengfeng processes both tin concentrates (primary product) and zinc concentrates (secondary product), recovering indium as a byproduct of zinc smelting. China's dominance in global indium production (~75% of global supply) stems from exactly this integrated zinc/tin/indium smelting cluster in Yunnan — where the economics of zinc and tin recovery subsidize indium extraction at marginal cost. Without the zinc and tin production, much of China's indium would be uneconomic to recover.
