Yunnan Chihong Zinc & Germanium operates the world's largest primary germanium processing facility in Qujing, Yunnan Province -- a location chosen because Yunnan's zinc-lead-germanium ore deposits (particularly at Huize) are among the richest in the world for germanium byproduct recovery. Germanium occurs in low concentrations in zinc ores and some coal fly ash; it concentrates in zinc smelter residues and is recovered during refining. Yunnan Chihong's scale allows economic germanium recovery that smaller zinc smelters cannot justify. China's August 2023 export controls on germanium (and gallium), explicitly citing national security, caused immediate price spikes as Western buyers realized their dependence on Chinese supply for critical defense and telecommunications materials. The same export controls that Yunnan Chihong's germanium business operates under are the Chinese government's explicit acknowledgment that controlling this supply chain has strategic value.
