Yunnan Phosphate Group Co., Ltd. (Kunming, Yunnan Province; state-owned enterprise under Yunnan provincial government; SZSE: 002185) is China's largest integrated phosphate company and one of the world's largest yellow phosphorus (P4) producers. The company controls major phosphate rock deposits in Yunnan Province — the Jinning and Haikou phosphate mines hold over 2 billion tonnes of phosphate rock reserves — and operates electric arc furnace P4 production powered by Yunnan's hydroelectric grid (Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang rivers). Yunnan Phosphate produces yellow phosphorus (P4), phosphoric acid (thermal and wet process), phosphate fertilizers (DAP, MAP, SSP), and specialty phosphorus chemicals including STPP (sodium tripolyphosphate) and sodium hexametaphosphate. The company benefits from three geographical advantages that concentrate in Yunnan Province simultaneously: massive domestic phosphate rock reserves, access to the cheapest hydroelectric power in China (electric arc furnaces require 12-14 MWh per tonne of P4), and proximity to road/rail links into Southeast Asia.

  • Did you know2023

Yunnan Phosphate's yellow phosphorus (P4) is simultaneously the feedstock for: the global phosphate fertilizer supply chain (P4 → phosphoric acid → DAP/MAP for crop nutrition); the herbicide supply chain (P4 → PCl3 → glyphosate); the food additive supply chain (P4 → STPP used in meat processing, seafood treatment, and dishwasher detergent); and the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain (P4 → phosphine gas used for n-type semiconductor doping in silicon wafers). The food supply chain, the agricultural supply chain, the crop protection supply chain, and the semiconductor supply chain all have upstream dependencies on the same Yunnan phosphate rock deposits and electric arc furnaces. If China restricts phosphate rock exports or phosphorus chemical exports (as it did briefly in 2021 when domestic fertilizer shortages led to export controls), the impact cascades simultaneously into global fertilizer markets, glyphosate markets, food processing ingredient markets, and semiconductor fab chemical supply. Five distinct global supply chains share a single Chinese geological and industrial chokepoint in Yunnan Province.

  • Origin2023

Yunnan Phosphate Group is a Yunnan provincial state enterprise established to exploit the confluence of two natural advantages that make Yunnan Province the optimal location for phosphorus chemistry: China's largest phosphate rock reserves (the Jinning and Haikou mines hold over 2 billion tonnes) and China's cheapest hydroelectric power (Yunnan's three major rivers — Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang — descend from the Tibetan Plateau through deep gorges that power massive hydroelectric dams, producing electricity at costs below anywhere else in China). Yellow phosphorus (P4) production requires 12-14 MWh of electricity per tonne — an energy intensity that makes phosphorus production prohibitively expensive without cheap power. Yunnan's hydroelectric grid, built to serve the P4 industry and industrial development broadly, makes Yunnan Phosphate's P4 the cheapest in the world outside of specialized low-cost contexts. The company is embedded in China's southwestern development strategy: Yunnan borders Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, and its phosphate exports support fertilizer supply chains across Southeast Asia. Phosphate rock from Yunnan provincial state mines, reduced using Tibetan Plateau hydroelectricity, supplies the global agrochemical and fertilizer supply chains.
