Yunnan Phosphate Group is a Yunnan provincial state enterprise established to exploit the confluence of two natural advantages that make Yunnan Province the optimal location for phosphorus chemistry: China's largest phosphate rock reserves (the Jinning and Haikou mines hold over 2 billion tonnes) and China's cheapest hydroelectric power (Yunnan's three major rivers — Jinsha, Lancang, and Nujiang — descend from the Tibetan Plateau through deep gorges that power massive hydroelectric dams, producing electricity at costs below anywhere else in China). Yellow phosphorus (P4) production requires 12-14 MWh of electricity per tonne — an energy intensity that makes phosphorus production prohibitively expensive without cheap power. Yunnan's hydroelectric grid, built to serve the P4 industry and industrial development broadly, makes Yunnan Phosphate's P4 the cheapest in the world outside of specialized low-cost contexts. The company is embedded in China's southwestern development strategy: Yunnan borders Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, and its phosphate exports support fertilizer supply chains across Southeast Asia. Phosphate rock from Yunnan provincial state mines, reduced using Tibetan Plateau hydroelectricity, supplies the global agrochemical and fertilizer supply chains.
