Zhejiang NHU was founded in 1995 in Xinchang, Zhejiang Province -- a small city in the eastern Chinese mountains that has become known specifically for its pharmaceutical and fine chemical cluster. Xinchang's chemical cluster grew alongside NHU, with multiple specialty chemical companies locating there to share infrastructure and supply chain relationships. NHU built its Vitamin E dominance by developing a Chinese synthesis route using isophytol (a terpene chemical synthesized from isobutylene and acetone, which China produces cheaply from petrochemical feedstocks) rather than the natural-source d-alpha-tocopherol route. The synthetic DL-alpha-tocopherol produced by NHU is technically equivalent (for most applications) to natural vitamin E at roughly half the cost. Chinese cost advantages -- petrochemical feedstock availability, energy cost, and labor -- allowed NHU to compete European producers (Roche, BASF, DSM) out of the bulk Vitamin E market through the 2000s and 2010s. The vitamin E market transformation mirrors the pattern seen in solar panels, LED lighting, and EVs: Chinese manufacturers achieving dominant market share through cost structure advantages built on government-supported industrial development.
