PBO (poly-p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fiber from Zhongke Jinqi serves both civilian industrial applications (concrete reinforcement in Chinese construction, heat-resistant industrial textiles) and military-adjacent applications (body armor composites, high-performance aerospace structural panels). Toyobo MC's ZYLON -- the only other commercial PBO -- is used in US Interceptor body armor, aerospace composite structures, and extreme-performance protective gear. Zhongke Jinqi New Material Co. in Zhuji, Zhejiang has established the second industrial-scale PBO (poly-p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fiber production line in the world. The first is Toyobo MC Corporation of Japan, which has held a near-monopoly on commercial PBO fiber under the ZYLON brand since the 1990s. PBO fiber has the highest tensile strength-to-weight ratio of any commercial fiber -- it is used in body armor, rocket motor casings, high-temperature protective textiles, and extreme-strength ropes. Zhongke Jinqi achieving commercial PBO scale is significant because it breaks Toyobo MC's practical monopoly, and because Chinese domestic PBO production supports applications in aerospace, defense, and protective equipment that previously required Japanese fiber. Zhuji, Zhejiang is primarily known as the world's largest sock-manufacturing city -- the largest sock market in the world operates alongside an advanced fiber company attempting to displace a Japanese defense material monopoly.
