Zydus is one of India's big generic-drug makers, and India is the "pharmacy of the world" — Indian firms supply a huge share of the generic medicines consumed in the US and globally by volume (the US sources roughly 40% or more of its generics from India). But there's a concentration beneath the concentration: India's generic industry depends heavily on China for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and key starting materials. So an "Indian" generic pill often rests on Chinese chemical intermediates, meaning the affordable-medicine supply chain has two stacked dependencies — on India for formulation, on China for the chemistry. Zydus, found here via generic tramadol (an analgesic where Indian API dominates), exemplifies it: cheap, essential medicines flow from India, but the molecules frequently start in China. It's a layered vulnerability the pandemic and recurring drug-shortage crises exposed, and one of the most consequential supply concentrations in all of healthcare.
