Facility
Bayan Obo Rare Earth & Iron Ore Mine (Inner Mongolia)
World's largest rare earth deposit (40%+ of known global reserves; ~50% of global annual production); simultaneously one of China's major iron ore mines. Ore body: cerium 50% of REE content, lanthanum 30%. Annual tailings exceed 3.5 million metric tons. Located 150 km north of Baotou, Inner Mongolia. A single geological formation in one Chinese city supplies ~50% of all rare earth elements — including most of the world's lanthanum.
