Borregaard Sarpsborg Biorefinery (Vanillin)

World's only major vanillin production site using the lignin (wood pulp) route. Producing vanillin since 1962; expanded to 1,500 MT/year in 2019 (+250 MT). Uses Norway spruce from PEFC-certified forests; the biorefinery uses 94% of the wood input across cellulose, lignin, sugar, and ethanol products. EuroVanillin Supreme has 90% lower CO₂ vs. guaiacol-based vanillin. The only commercially operating lignin-to-vanillin process in the world at this scale.
