Borregaard's vanillin at Sarpsborg, Norway is produced from lignosulfonates — the waste liquor from sulfite wood pulp processing, historically a major source of water pollution near paper mills. Borregaard converts this waste stream into food-grade vanillin that can be labeled 'natural flavoring substance' under EU Regulation No. 1334/2008 and potentially under FDA natural flavor definitions. EuroVanillin Supreme has 90% lower CO₂ than guaiacol-based vanillin and is the world's only PEFC-certified vanillin. Borregaard traces its origin to 1889 when Kellner, Partington and Co. established one of Norway's first industrial pulp mills at Sarpsborg, using the Sarpen Falls on the Glomma River for power. The facility was acquired by Orkla Group in 1986. Rather than following other Scandinavian mills into commodity paper or closure as cheap Asian pulp eroded European markets, Borregaard invested over decades in chemical valorization of all wood components — cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin — becoming what it describes as the world's most advanced biorefinery. Its lignin-vanillin production line at Sarpsborg has operated since 1962, the longest-running example of commercial lignin valorization.
