Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex
Kamoa-Kakula (Haut-Katanga Province, DRC; Ivanhoe Mines 39.6%, Zijin Mining 39.6%, Crystal River 0.8%, DRC government 20%) is the world's highest-grade large copper deposit and one of the most significant new mine developments in decades. Opened Phase 1 in May 2021; Phase 2 in 2022; Phase 3 ramp-up through 2023-2025. Produced approximately 394,000 tonnes of copper in 2023. Average ore grade ~3.6% Cu — approximately 5-7x the global average copper ore grade. The shallowest copper mineralization at Kamoa was discovered at just 30m depth — unusually accessible for a large copper deposit. Kamoa-Kakula is targeting 600,000+ tonnes/year by Phase 3 completion. A dedicated on-site smelter (Kamoa Copper Smelter) is under construction (2024-2026) to process concentrate to blister copper, reducing the concentrate export logistics burden.
