Nicor Gas — Central Illinois Agricultural Distribution Segment

Operated by Nicor Gas (Southern Company Gas)US · Illinoisprocessing

Nicor Gas serves Champaign and McLean counties — the heart of Illinois's corn-producing region — where commercial grain elevators operate continuous-flow dryers burning 8,000-20,000 MMBtu per elevator per harvest season. Nicor Gas coordinates with Panhandle Eastern and ANR Pipeline for incremental fall capacity. Illinois natural gas storage fields (Manlove, Pontiac, Herscher) are accessed by Nicor via Panhandle Eastern and ANR to supplement harvest-season demand. These storage fields are dual-purpose: they supply residential winter heat demand and agricultural fall drying demand simultaneously from the same underground pool. A storage drawdown for early-September grain drying reduces cushion available for January residential heating, creating a seasonal supply planning conflict.
