Kola MMC Nickel Refinery (Monchegorsk)
Nornickel's Kola Metallurgical Company (Kola MMC) refinery complex located in Monchegorsk, Murmansk Oblast, approximately 180km south of Murmansk. This facility processes nickel-copper-cobalt sulfide ore from Kola Peninsula mines into Class 1 nickel (nickel metal, nickel sulfate), copper, cobalt, and precious metals. Kola MMC is one of two major Nornickel refining centers (the other being Norilsk/Taimyr in Siberia). Kola's proximity to European markets made it historically the primary supplier to European battery and specialty chemical manufacturers. Post-2022 sanctions pressure has prompted European buyers to seek non-Russian alternatives, but Kola MMC's Class 1 nickel output (~100,000 tonnes/year combined Nornickel refined nickel) cannot be quickly replaced.
