PBI Performance Products Rock Hill Plant

Operated by PBI Performance ProductsUS · Rock Hill, South Carolinamanufacturing

Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina — the world's only PBI polybenzimidazole fiber production facility. Company states "every strand of PBI fiber is made" at this single plant. Rock Hill is approximately 25 miles south of Charlotte, NC. The facility is in the Charlotte metro area, which is subject to hurricane remnants, winter ice storms, and occasional severe tornado events. Any sustained production disruption — fire, flood, severe storm, equipment failure, labor action, or business decision — would eliminate 100% of commercial-grade PBI fiber globally. There is no qualified alternate supplier. Reformulating an NFPA 1971-certified PBI Gold outer shell fabric without PBI fiber requires selecting an alternative outer shell material, obtaining new fabric certification, and having turnout gear manufacturers re-certify new gear designs — a process requiring 24-36 months minimum. PBI fiber was developed from Celanese Corporation work under US Air Force high-temperature materials contracts in the 1960s; the same polymer that protected Apollo-era astronauts in thermal protection suits is now produced at this single plant for civilian firefighters.
