State Grid — Sichuan-Yunnan UHV Hydropower Corridor
State Grid's Sichuan-Yunnan ultra-high-voltage (UHV) ±800kV DC transmission lines carry hydropower from Yangtze River tributary dams (Xiluodu 13,860 MW, Xiangjiaba 6,448 MW, Baihetan 16,000 MW, Wudongde 10,200 MW) eastward to aluminum smelters in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and coastal provinces. This corridor delivers ~300 TWh/year — one of the world's largest electricity transmission systems. China's aluminum smelters have been relocating from coal-powered Shandong and Xinjiang provinces to hydro-powered Sichuan and Yunnan to reduce carbon intensity and production costs. Disruption (earthquake, dam failure, grid fault) to this corridor would immediately affect ~20% of global aluminum smelting capacity.
