Statkraft — Tonstad Hydropower Station, Rogaland, Norway
Tonstad Power Station (Rogaland, Norway; 960 MW; one of Norway's largest hydropower plants) is part of Statkraft's Sira-Kvina system. Norwegian hydropower from Statkraft and other utilities powers Norsk Hydro's Husnes, Sunndalsøra, and other Norwegian aluminum smelters — which collectively produce ~1.1 million tonnes/yr of aluminum (some of the world's lowest-carbon primary aluminum due to hydro-sourced electricity). Tonstad exemplifies the Norwegian fjord hydrology that gives Norway a permanent structural electricity cost advantage for energy-intensive refining.
