Fumed Silica (AEROSIL) — CMP & Industrial

Fumed silica (pyrogenic silica) is produced by flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride at ~1,000°C. Primary use: thickening/rheology control agent in adhesives, coatings, sealants, and pharmaceuticals. Critical semiconductor use: fumed silica is the abrasive component in chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry — used to polish silicon wafers, oxide layers, and metal layers to atomic flatness between each deposition step. CMP slurry is consumed at every node in advanced logic and DRAM manufacturing. Global fumed silica market ~500,000 MT/year; Evonik (AEROSIL) holds ~45% share, followed by Cabot (CAB-O-SIL) ~25%, Wacker ~15%. Pharmaceutical-grade fumed silica is also a critical flow aid in tablet manufacturing.
