N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) Solvent

N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a polar aprotic solvent with primary industrial applications in: (1) LITHIUM-ION BATTERY ELECTRODE COATING — the dominant use, where NMP dissolves PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) binder to form cathode slurry for coating onto aluminum foil; approximately 200-400 tonnes of NMP required per GWh of battery production, implying ~180,000-400,000 tonnes/year global demand for batteries alone at 2024 production rates; (2) dialysis membrane production — dissolves polysulfone/PES for hollow fiber membrane spinning via phase inversion (~2,000-4,000 tonnes/year globally, much smaller); (3) semiconductor and electronics cleaning; (4) pharmaceutical drug delivery solvents. NMP is classified as an SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) reproductive toxin under EU REACH — tightening EU exposure limits create compliance pressure and may shift battery electrode manufacturing away from Europe. Some battery manufacturers (CATL, Panasonic) are transitioning to water-based electrode processes to eliminate NMP dependency; dry electrode processes (Tesla 4680) would eliminate NMP entirely.
