Glycol Ethers (2-Butoxyethanol / Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether)

Coalescents and cosolvents that allow latex paint to film-form at ambient temperatures. 2-Butoxyethanol is the workhorse for architectural paints. Eastman Chemical and Dow are primary suppliers. Used at 1–5% by weight but functionally irreplaceable for film formation in cold environments.
