Service members who receive assistive technology or devices for a serious illness or injury that happened or got worse while on active duty can be allowed to keep that equipment when they leave the military. The Secretary of Defense makes the rules for who may keep the items. Assistive technology and assistive technology device — as defined in section 3 of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 (29 U.S.C. 3002).
