Summary

The Secretary of Defense can provide help for a funeral or memorial for a current or former Member of Congress, including travel to and from the event. The Secretary may give that help if asked by one of four congressional leaders — the Speaker of the House, the House Minority Leader, the Senate Majority Leader, or the Senate Minority Leader — or if the Secretary decides the help is needed for the Department of Defense to carry out its duties. The cost can come from funds that are authorized for operation and maintenance.

(a)Support for Funerals.—
Subject to subsection (b), the Secretary of Defense may provide such support as the Secretary considers appropriate for a funeral or memorial event for a Member or former Member of Congress, including support with respect to transportation to and from such a funeral or memorial event, in accordance with this section.
(b)Requests for Support; Secretary Determination.—
The Secretary may provide support under this section— (1)
(2)if the Secretary determines such support is necessary to carry out duties or responsibilities of the Department of Defense.
(c)Use of Funds.—
The Secretary may use funds authorized to be appropriated for operation and maintenance to provide support under this section.
