Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle E— Reserve Components › Part III— PROMOTION AND RETENTION OF OFFICERS ON THE RESERVE ACTIVE-STATUS LIST › Chapter 1409— CONTINUATION OF OFFICERS ON THE RESERVE ACTIVE-STATUS LIST AND SELECTIVE EARLY REMOVAL › § 14703
Each military department (Army, Navy, Air Force) may, with the officer’s agreement, keep reserve officers who work in medical fields on active duty. That covers doctors, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists, podiatrists (where named), nurses, chaplains, allied health and biomedical science officers, and similar medical service corps members. These actions must follow rules the Secretary of Defense issues and do not apply to officers listed in sections 14503, 14504, 14505, and 14506. An officer kept on active duty under this rule cannot stay past their 68th birthday unless the service secretary decides it is needed. With the officer’s consent, the secretary may extend active duty beyond age 68 for specific cases and for whatever time the secretary finds appropriate.
