Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part II— PERSONNEL › Chapter 81— CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES › § 1599i
The Department of Defense can pay a hiring bonus to someone taking a job at a hard-to-staff location. The bonus can be up to 25 percent of the person’s yearly basic pay at the start of the agreed service, multiplied by the number of years agreed (including fractions), but not more than four years. The new hire must sign an agreement to work the agreed time (no more than four years) and agree to repay the bonus or accept other job rules if they do not finish. A "covered location" is one the Secretary of Defense says has critical hiring problems because it is remote, isolated, or has extreme climate. This authority ends on September 30, 2022.
