Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part IV— SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROPERTY › Chapter 141— MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS RELATING TO PROPERTY › § 2387
Contracts that provide working dogs to the Department of Defense must say that when a dog’s service ends, the dog must be sent to the 341st Training Squadron for veterinary screening and care under section 2583, then reclassified as a military animal and placed for adoption. A dog’s service is over only when the contracting officer decides the dog’s last contract assignment was with the Department of Defense and no other federal department or agency can use the dog because of age, injury, or poor performance. A "contract working dog" is a dog that works for the Department of Defense under a contract and is trained and housed by the company that supplies it.
