The Secretary of Energy may give a certificate of commendation to current or former Department of Energy employees and to current or former contractor employees whose work on keeping the U.S. nuclear stockpile safe and secure helped protect the nation. The certificate must describe the person’s service and note their hard work, knowledge, and sacrifices in keeping a strong, safe, and usable U.S. nuclear deterrent during the Cold War or afterward. The term Department of Energy also covers any agency that came before it.
