The Chief of the Dental Corps must be an officer appointed as described in section 3039. Under rules the Secretary of the Army sets, the Chief must lead all Army dental work and all dental matters must be sent to the Chief. The Chief must set professional standards and policies; propose changes to how the Dental Corps and dental support staff are organized and used, including appointments, promotions, training, and transfers; and advise the Office of the Surgeon General on dental issues. Under the Secretary’s rules, dental personnel must be put into units led by a commissioned officer of the Army Medical Department who answers to the local commander for professional, technical, and regulated administrative duties.
