Title 11 › Chapter 1— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 107
Most bankruptcy filings and dockets are public and can be viewed for free at reasonable times, except as limited by section 112. If someone in the case asks, the court must hide trade secrets and confidential business information and may hide scandalous or defamatory material. The court can also block means of identification (see 18 U.S.C. 1028(d)) and related information if revealing it would risk identity theft or other unlawful harm. Law enforcement or regulators may see protected items after a private showing of cause. The U.S. trustee and officials named in 28 U.S.C. 586(f) have full access but must not disclose court‑protected material.
