The Coast Guard may spend money, under rules the Secretary sets, to catch and turn in deserters, stragglers, and prisoners. If someone is court‑martialed for desertion from the Coast Guard in time of war and is dismissed or dishonorably discharged, that person cannot later join any U.S. military service unless a board of commissioned Coast Guard officers removes the disability and the Secretary approves, or the person is restored to duty in time of war.
