Title 15 › Chapter 52— ELECTRIC AND HYBRID VEHICLE RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DEMONSTRATION › § 2514
The law lets the Secretary of Energy get federal money to run the program. It authorizes up to $30,000,000 for the year ending September 30, 1977 (at least $10,000,000 of that must go to battery research), $40,000,000 for 1978, $25,000,000 for 1979, $20,000,000 for 1980, and $45,000,000 for 1981. Money given can be used until it is spent. Any amounts authorized before the year ending September 30, 1981 but not yet given can still be provided in later years up through September 30, 1983. Money the Secretary gets from vehicle sales, leases, or other program activities can be kept and used for the program and kept until spent. But whatever is received in a year will reduce the authorized amount for that same year by the same amount.
