Title 15 › Chapter 8— FALSELY STAMPED GOLD OR SILVER OR GOODS MANUFACTURED THEREFROM › § 295
Requires that gold items moved into, out of, mailed, or transported through the United States must be almost as pure as the purity mark says. The actual purity of the gold or its alloy cannot be more than three one‑thousandth parts (0.003) lower than the number stamped or printed on the item, its tag, or its packaging. When testing purity, if the test piece does not include any lower‑purity solder used to join parts, it must meet the 0.003 rule. If the whole item is tested including any lower‑purity solder, then watchcases and flatware still must not be more than three one‑thousandth parts (0.003) below the mark, while any other gold article must not be more than seven one‑thousandth parts (0.007) below the mark. Both kinds of tests apply together.
